A Study on the size of pneumatic cells of the temporal bone

Abstract
It is generally accepted that the pneumatization of the temporal bone depends on genetic.: factor, and inflammatory diseases of the middle ear occur more commonly in the poorly pneumatized temporal bone.
A statistical analysis was performed with 391 cases of temporal bone X-ray film (taken,_ by Law¢¥s view) who had visited Chung-Ang University, College of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology from May, 1975 till December, 1978. The size of pneumatic cells of the. temporal bone was measured with a planimeter, and the effect of inflammatory diseases of the middle ears on the pneumatization of the temporal bone was studied.
The results are as follows:
1. In 51 cases (102-_ears) of non-inflammatory group, the mean size of pneumatic cells. is 16.0cm2 (S.D.=6.8, range 3.9 to 31.9cm2) in the right and 15.9cm2(S.D.=7.9, range 5.1 to 38.4cm2) in the left.
2. In non-inflammatory group, the size of pneumatic cells of 5 years old is 5cm and_ reached the mean size of pneumatic cells of non-inflammatory group (16.0cm2) in. about 10 years old.
3. In 51 cases(102 ears) of non-inflammatory group, the difference between the right.
and left is 16.9%(S.D.=18.5, the maximum difference, 69.1%).
4. In 325 cases (406 ears) with CSOM, the mean size of pneumatic cells is 9.4cm2
(S.D.=4.7, range 1.6 to 34.6cm2). The corelation between age and pneumatization.
degree is not significant.
5. In 127 cases (254 ears) with CSOM in the right, the difference between the right
and left is 35.0% (S.D.=22.9). In 117 cases (234 ears) with CSOM in the left, the.
difference between the right and left is 33.6% (S.D.=23.9). In 81 cases (162 ears)
with bilateral CSOM, the difference between the right and left is 20.3%(S.D.=15.4).
6. The difference of the mean size of pneumatic cells between non-inflammatory group.
and CSOM group was statistically significant. (p<0.01). 7. In 15 cases (15 ears)
with cholesteatoma the mean size of pneumatic cells is 8.6cm2 (S.D.=4.6, range 3.1
to 19.7cm2) in the diseased ears and 13.2cm2 (S.D.-6.1, range 3.3 to 26.7cm2) in
